Travel isn't just for the people who want to get away from life. For some people, travel becomes their life, as they work in the travel industry. There are many different types of jobs that you can have within the travel industry, but a cruise reservations agent is one of the jobs that you can do quite easily. There are lots of nice things about working as a cruise reservations agent. One of them is that with the technologies now available through the internet and other sources, you can be a cruise reservations agent even if you are in a town that does not cater to cruise ships. Many different travel agencies and cruise agencies hire people to be cruise reservations agents, so it is important to know that you can do this job from just about anywhere. A cruise reservations agent is someone that you can be no matter where your home base might be.

Job Duties

As a cruise reservations agent, you will be responsible for making sure that the cruises are booked and that people who call you get access to the best cruise information so they can make good choices when it comes to cruises. You will have many different duties.

First of all, you will need to make sure that you know all of the various details regarding the cruises that the company you work for is offering. You should know the prices of the cruises, where they go, the times and dates of the cruises, and the various activities that take place aboard the ship. You should also know details like whether or not it is a family friendly cruise or whether this is a cruise that doesn't cater to children. You should be able to explain to the people who are making the reservations which cruises will fit their needs best. Simply put, one of the biggest job duties of a cruise reservations agent is simply knowing your stuff. You are going to be asked information each and every day, so you need to be sure that you are able to answer the questions as they are posted to you.

Next, you will need to either answer phone calls or answer emails and online submissions in order to make the reservations for the cruises. This means that you will either need to be able to work on the phone or online – and in some situations you will need to do both. When someone calls to make a cruise reservation, you will need to take their information, get them booked on the right cruise, and then be sure to follow through with any of the other reservation techniques that you will need to do in order to make the cruise work as perfectly as possible for the person who is booking it.

You might also have other duties as a cruise reservation agent. You might need to process payment information like credit cards or check information. You also might need to double check reservations, send out emails or phone calls to remind people of the cruises that they have booked, or send out mailings to past customers regarding new cruise deals.

Previous Experience

In order to be a cruise reservations agent, there are a few things that you will need to have for your experience. First of all, you will need to have focused on a lot of different customer relations in your previous jobs. You'll need to have experience answering phones or taking online reservations. You will also need to have sales experience as potential travelers often call the reservations center without knowing for sure that they will want to book a cruise and you should be able to sell the cruises to them. Your company might require that you try to push other types of sales as well, so you will want to have as much sales experience as possible.

Personal Qualifications

There are several personal qualifications that you will want to have when you are looking for a job as a cruise reservations agent. First of all, you will need to have excellent customer service skills. This is important because you want to be sure that you are able to have the right kind of attitudes that will help the customers booking cruises to get their questions answered and to feel at ease with the reservations that they have made. You will need to answer questions, talk to the customers about what they want, and then double check to be sure that they are getting the right reservations.

You will also need to be patient, because you are often going to be looking at long conversations with lots of questions. A good cruise reservations agent is also able to multitask, because you might be taking phone reservations at the same time that you are checking the online reservations, and directing someone who has come into the office for a reservation as well. Often cruise reservation agents must need to be able to do their daily work with minimum supervision, so you should be able to take initiative and work on your own very well.

Work Environment & Salary

As a cruise reservations agent, you will be working on the phones or online. If you are working for a very large company you might be working in a call center, taking reservations. If you are working in a small company you might be working in a smaller and more intimate environment. Depending on where they work, cruise reservation agents can earn between $25,000 and $35,000 per year.

Conclusion

For a person with the right job qualifications and experience, working as a cruise reservations agent can be an exciting and rewarding career move!
