A new report shows that black lung disease, a leading cause of illness among coal miners, is starting to rise again in the face of declining profits on coal and increased safety violations in mines. From 1970 to 1990, the prevalence of black lung decreased over 20%, due to increased legislation protecting coal miners from occupational hazards. Presently, however, lax enforcement of safety regulations may be causing incidence of the disease to rise again.
