Boeing has sent out layoff notices to 39 of its employees. The notices will give impacted workers a 60-day notice period before they are out of a job. The workers who will be impacted are the ones who are currently working on the F-22 jet fighter and the 737 airborne early warning and control aircraft program. At the current moment we do not know why it was these programs that were slated to be cut.

While the notices went out to 39 workers the company hopes to actually be cutting back on fewer workers. They are looking for other ways to reduce their expenses, hoping to cut some of the positions through attrition and working on ways to move workers into areas with open positions, instead of simply letting them go.

Though with a number of airlines, both big and small commercial airlines making cuts it is unlikely that many of them will invest in new infrastructure in the near future.

Of course these are not the first round of layoffs to come to the folks at Boeing have had to dealt with. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage here is a look at some of the larger job cuts made by the company earlier in this year:

“Workers at Boeing, a leading aerospace and defense corporation, confirmed that the company will remove over 1,000 employees from its C-17 production line at its headquarters in Long Beach, California by late 2012.  Boeing plans to reduce its C-17 production, from 15 to 10 jets every year, in line with its long-term business plan.  The affected workers said that Boeing officials have spoken to them recently to relay the bad news.  The slated layoff is expected to bring the C-17 workforce in Long Beach to about 4,000 by 2012, less than a third of the local aerospace work force during the early 1990s.

…As of today, Boeing is still mum about the layoff issue. Boeing officials did not confirm yet the details of the impending cuts. In February, Jerry Drelling, Boeing spokesman, mentioned that the company may layoff workers to remain competitive in the market and help maintain an affordable price for future orders. However, at that time, Drelling did not elaborate on the details as to an exact number of workers to be laid off and when. “We’re still completing the analysis of any reduction in work force, and we’re striving to mitigate the impacts on our employees as much as possible. But it’s something that needs to be done given reduced demand domestically and to ensure the aircraft remains affordable in years to come.” ”

“…layoff notices to employees that are part of its missile defense program on Thursday, March 17. The layoffs affected about 220 of its employees around the country, giving them 60 days notice to find other work.  About 130 of the jobs affected were in Huntsville, Alabama, and 90 were at other locations that Boeing has in the United States.  Boeing currently employs about 3,000 employees in Huntsville alone.”
