Qantas Airways Lays Off Again By katie  |  Dated: 05-22-2012

It looks like the management of Qantas Airways is at it again. They are going to make another set of cuts to the staff in order to reduce their operating expenses again. Some of you may recall that this is not the first time that the company has made large cuts in order to cover its own bottom line. Some of you may recall back in the beginning of May when the company was slated to cut back on more than 1,000 workers in order to save on cash. For those of you who don’t here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “This time the company is set to get rid of 400 of its workers at one facility and then another 660 from another facility. The 400 workers at the first facility who are soon to be out of a job are coming from the company’s heavy maintenance base just outside the city of Melbourne. The second set of layoffs, the 660, has yet to be confirmed official by the company. The information is coming from a source close to the company and the final number on this layoff may change before all is said and done.”

Before that the cuts to the company created quite a stir with the people, who though that the layoff of regular staff was not warranted given the current level of executive compensation. For those of you who missed out on that coverage the first time around here is a look, “The people in the nation of Australia are getting quite annoyed at the executive greed of the folks over at Qantas airlines. After announcing a round of layoffs in August of this year, with about 1000 jobs being cut do to the need to balance the budget. That can be enough to make the people losing their jobs mad but when you consider the newest bit of information released people are even less happy. A new piece was published that shows the salaries of the Qantas airline executives and they were fairly high. The salaries were described by those who were familiar with the figures described then as astronomical and in other have sparked anger.” So how do you think that the people will react to the news of this most recent round of layoffs coming from the airline management to a significant number of the workers?

This time Qantas is getting ready to cut back on 500 jobs in order to save an estimated $100 million each year as the company merges some of its maintenance facilities in order to save on costs. The company is attributing the need to save money to both a decrease in consumer demand for flights and an increase in the costs of fuel.

The majority of the job cuts are set to come from the maintenance facility at Tullamarine. The company will then focus all of its maintenance efforts on facilities in Avalon and Brisbane.
