The Mayor of Detroit, Dave Big, had hoped that the city council would approve his plan to make cuts for the amount of money employees in the city earn, along with benefits received as well. Bing believed that such measures were necessary in order for the city of Detroit to avoid dealing with bankruptcy and other financial issues and concerns. However, while Bing believed that city council would approve his plan for cuts, the cuts were not passed on Tuesday. It is possible that the cuts will be implemented in other ways but at the time, they have not been passed.

Earlier on in the week, Bing issued a statement in which he talked about how it would be important for his plan to go through city council as it is the best way to avoid putting the city into any sort of financial crisis. He believed that if it was not acted on as soon as possible, huge problems will arise for the city of Detroit, putting it in a financial crisis. While the mayor surely sent out a warning to the city council in Detroit, they did not take to his warning and have decided to preserve the amount of pay employees receive as well as the benefits they receive. At the time, the city council has chosen to reject the employment terms that Bing and his administration had decided on.

In his proposal, Bing asked that salaries of employees in the city be cut by at least 10 percent. He also asked that insurance premiums rise and for some of the available benefits to be cut off, which would typically include optical care. However, several council members decided to vote against the agreement. Some of the council members include Brenda Jones and Kwame Kenyatta. There were some council members who did vote in favor of Bing’s proposal to make cuts, including Gary Brown and James Tate.

While the city council did not vote in favor of Bing overall, it is believed that the measure may still end up being imposed anyway. It is believed that it may be necessary for the city to move forward and avoid debt. The city is unable to afford to continue to negotiate with all of the different unions because at this point, the city simply cannot afford to do so. Changes are absolutely necessary and if they do not occur, the city is going to end up bankrupt. It is a sacrifice that has to be made but it is something that needs to be done.
