Employment and Unemployment in Connecticut By jim  |  Dated: 07-20-2012

In 2012, the economy is now three years into a recovery process after dealing with such a crippling recession. The recession in the United States, commonly referred to as the Great Recession, began in around 2007 and ended in 2009. While it ended several years ago, it had such a negative impact on the United States as a whole. Many of the states in America have had to deal with such hardships ever since, including Connecticut. In fact, the labor market in the Connecticut area shows that there is hope for the future but there has also been plenty of hardship that the citizens of this state have unfortunately had to deal with.

The Labor Department for the state of Connecticut recently reported that the state managed to add a total of 1,400 new employees to the payroll during the month of June. Information was also provided that shows a whopping total of 8,800 people more people are employed in June of 2012 in the state of Connecticut than they were the previous year, back in June of 2011. While this may sound like good news and it is something to be optimistic about, there has also been a lot of hardship. During the month of June, paychecks earned were much smaller than they were during the previous month of May in 2012. Along with smaller paychecks, the unemployment rate also increased a bit, going up from 7.8 percent to 8.1 percent, following directly behind the national unemployment rate, which is currently at 8.2 percent.

The Governor for the state, Dannel P. Malloy, issued a statement directly after the report was released and talked about how the private sector was doing well to improve the labor market in the state of Connecticut. Malloy says that at least a total of 5,000 jobs within the private sector had been created during the month of June. It is the private sector that seems to be helping Connecticut make improvements within its labor market. For the nation as a whole, the private sector did help to bring in hundreds and thousands of jobs during the month of June but even so, there were lots of cuts that took place within the public sector, bringing down the employment numbers. Malloy believes that the people of Connecticut should be optimistic. He understands that the state still has some way to go but he feels optimistic about job creation and is placing it at first priority. He also believes that the unemployment rate is not a bad sign, just a sign that more people are entering into the workforce.
