Corning Cable Systems Cuts Jobs By katie  |  Dated: 08-08-2012

When it comes to creating a list of the most recognizable brands in the world for few people Corning Cable Systems will be on the list. It is one of the companies that go about getting their business done without worrying too much about being in the forefront of their customer’s minds every day. For those of you who are not familiar with the company at all here is a look at how they have chosen to describe themselves, “Corning Cable Systems offers a broad range of end-to-end fiber optic and copper product solutions for customers’ telecommunications networks. Our customer-focused solutions include cables, connectors, and related hardware, and network services that include network design, project management, installation and maintenance, equipment rental and training programs.”

Well it looks like the company is getting ready to cut back on about 90 workers in order to reduce its expenses. The company is cutting back all of the jobs from the Winston-Salem facility, which means that this layoff is more than enough to qualify as a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

The only good news is that the company is getting rid of workers who are set to be cut from the payroll were hired on as temporary workers. So they were expecting that their employment would come to an end when all is said and done. Also, under the terms of a mass layoff action the company will have to give the workers some significant notice time before they are put off of the payroll and put back onto the unemployment line.

Interestingly enough the company has not put out f a statement about he layoffs. Instead they chose to, in their latest press release to instead explore their efforts to increase the speed of wireless connections in medical facilities, “Corning MobileAccess, part of Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, today announced that St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor has expanded its wireless footprint and improved overall connectivity at the hospital through the deployment of a Corning MobileAccess distributed antenna system (DAS). St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor is a leading healthcare provider in Ann Arbor, Mich., and a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System (SJMHS)… RF Connect recommended the Corning MobileAccess2000 DAS, a multi-carrier, multi-service indoor wireless platform which supports existing and legacy wireless services, like 2G and 3G, and emerging services, like 4G LTE. Another benefit was MobileAccess2000’s modular architecture, which made adding services or carriers easier by not requiring major construction while minimizing interruptions for staff, visitors, and patients.”
