Rockwell Collins May Cut 1,000 Jobs By katie  |  Dated: 10-01-2012

Rockwell Collins is a name that some of you may know, while others among you are at a total loss. So before we talk about the job cuts that are to come we will begin with a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself, “At Rockwell Collins, we never forget that the world’s leading aerospace and defense companies rely on us for smart communications and aviation electronics solutions. We put our technology and innovation to work to help you advance your goals. Working together, we strive to build trust. Every day.”

The defense contractor is getting ready to cut back on about 1,000 employees if the proposed government budget changes go into effect. If this happens the company is likely to trigger a mass layoff action. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.” The only good news is that a mass layoff action means that workers must be given some advance notice before they are taken off of the payroll.

Of course this is not the first time this year that the company has made cuts, without the threat of government cuts. Here is a look at some previous cuts made by the company this year, “In order to make reductions in cost the company is getting ready to cut 140 jobs from the payrolls. The job cuts will come from two different locations run by the company. 80 jobs are set to be cut from a facility in the city of Cedar Rapids and the rest of the jobs will be lost from the city of Richardson in Texas.”

This is, as you may imagine, not the only defense contractor to take the stance that the cuts in these funds will lead to job losses, “It looks like the management of Lockheed Martin is at it again. The company is going to be cutting back on workers yet again, and this time the numbers are pretty serious. The company is estimating that they are going to need to cut about 10,000 jobs when all is said and done. The threats of job cuts come from a proposed action by congress. In the propose action by congress goes through, a $1.2 trillion set of job cuts from the federal budget as part of a plan to help decrease the federal deficit, then the company is threat of job losses is very likely to become a reality.”
