Orlando Health to Cut Jobs By katie  |  Dated: 11-20-2012

Orlando Health is a name that many of you may not be that familiar with, unless you happen to live in the Orlando area. So before we talk about the job cuts that are being made to the company lets begin by talking about how they have chosen to describe itself, “Orlando Health is one of Florida’s most comprehensive private, not-for-profit healthcare networks, and is based in Orlando, FL. Our facilities, advanced medical treatments and procedures, and highly qualified staff have distinguished Orlando Health as a healthcare leader for nearly two million Central Florida residents and 4,500 international visitors annually…. Orlando Health is Central Florida’s fifth largest employer with over 14,000 employees and more than 2,000 affiliated physicians. Orlando Health possesses the area’s only Level One Trauma Centers for adults and pediatrics, specialty hospitals dedicated to children, women and babies and is a statutory teaching hospital system. Orlando Health is a community-based family of facilities dedicated to serving the needs of our region. Since 1918, we have been committed to providing the best quality healthcare for our region and citizens. Our commitment to serving the Central Florida area is long-established and we are constantly investing time, energy, and resources to provide the best possible healthcare for our community. We are also dedicated to reaching out to the community, and to put our resources into local organizations and groups that help to make a difference in the health and quality of life in Central Florida. Working together as a team, Orlando Health takes a leadership role in improving the health of the community while maintaining financial stability.”

Sadly the company is getting ready to cut back on a few hundred jobs. The company does not have a set number at the current moment, but the cuts are likely to number between 320 and 480 when all is said and done. Job cuts of this magnitude are enough to qualify as a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the company chooses to describe itself, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

The company did, in its last release, chose to talk about money it raised for charity instead of talking about the job cuts , “When friends Victoria Petrucelly and Jesse Theobald first came up with the idea to have a pink lemonade stand they were hoping to raise at least $50. When Victoria`s mother Angela was diagnosed with breast cancer, the event took on more meaning. On Monday, the girls presented MD Anderson Cancer Center Orlando with a check for $23,856.73.”
