Memorial Medical Center to Make Job Cuts By katie  |  Dated: 11-20-2012

Memorial Medical Center is a name that some of you may know about, though the odds are good that most of you who do not live in Northern California have not heard of the hospital or its system. So before we talk about the job cuts lets begin by taking a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself, “Memorial is affiliated with Sutter Health, a family of not-for-profit hospitals, physician organizations and other medical services that share resources and expertise to advance health care quality and access. Serving more than 100 communities in Northern California, Sutter Health is a regional leader in cardiac care, cancer treatment, orthopedics, obstetrics, and newborn intensive care, and is a pioneer in advanced patient safety technology.”

Sadly the company is getting ready to cut back on 114 jobs in a move to reduce its expenses. The company, which is coming from a mix of both clinical and non-clinical positions, will be making the actual job cuts in the month of January. Job cuts of this magnitude were enough to qualify as a mass layoff action under the current federal guidelines.

For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the company chooses to describe itself, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.” The only good news is that under the terms of a mass layoff action the workers must be given several weeks of notice before they put them off of the payroll. That is why the layoffs are not going into effect until the month of January.

Before that cuts were coming to Boston Children’s Hospital, here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “Sadly the facility is getting ready to cut back on about 225 jobs in order to make ends meet. The company is making a mass layoff action happen under the current federal guidelines… The company put out an interesting release about the its new research, but no information about the layoffs was posted, “A growing body of research shows that children who suffer severe neglect and social isolation have cognitive and social impairments as adults. A study from Boston Children’s Hospital shows, for the first time, how these functional impairments arise: Social isolation during early life prevents the cells that make up the brain’s white matter from maturing and producing the right amount of myelin, the fatty “insulation” on nerve fibers that helps them transmit long-distance messages within the brain.”

For the time being the company has not said much about severance for the soon to be displaced workers.
