Modesto, Salida Fire Officials Say Layoffs Can Be Avoided

Fire departments in Modesto, California, have been saved from reducing employee hours and periodically closing stations. The fire department was previously $1.8 million underfunded. There has been much controversy surrounding the budget deficits and the handling of the situation, such as not preparing for predetermined raises. Despite the problems, on Wednesday, officials signed a new budget that would grant fire departments over $30 million in funding.
