General Motors is putting 1,600 people back to work through an $890 million investment that will upgrade five factories in the U.S. and Canada.

The factories will be redesigned to upgrade V-8 engines so they are more fuel efficient, the Associated Press reports. The factories to be upgraded are in Tonawanda, N.Y.; St. Catherins Ontario; Bay City, Mich.; Bedford, Ind.; and Defiance Ohio.

The more efficient V-8 engines will increase fuel economy for GM’s pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and high-performance cars, according to the AP. The upgrade will help GM meet government fuel economy standards that become fully effective in 2016.

According to the report, the factory upgrades will result “in improved engines, transmissions and tires, and use of start-stop technology that halts the engine at stop lights to save fuel.” It will cost consumers an additional $926 per vehicle by 2016, but government officials note car owners will save more than $3,000 over the lives of their vehicles through better gas mileage.
