Miami-Dade Proposes Elimination of 1,200 Positions

Miami-Dade County in Florida unveiled its 2011 fiscal budget on Wednesday and things aren’t pretty. According to a report in the South Florida Business Journal, the budget contains 1,200 fewer funded positions then the previous year.

The ax will be dropped on 900 current workers and the remainder of the cuts will be made by not filling positions that are currently open, according to the proposed $7.35 billion budget. Miami-Dade County is currently facing a $440 million revenue shortfall.

Many of the job cuts will be made through departmental consolidation, County Manager George Burgess told the Business Journal. As an example, the International Trade Consortium will be merged will be merged with Housing and Community Development and Planning and Zoning.
