Layoffs, Early Retirement Likely For Savannah County Workers

Employees for Savannah County will be subject to layoffs and early retirement as the city council reviews the 2011 budget.
The council says that in order to fulfill the budget, they will need to hold 89 employee layoffs and 285 employees will be coerced to accept early retirement packages. Additionally, the council will look to combine some departments and jobs.
While nothing has been finalized, the layoffs are very likely.
Alderman Jeff Felser said, “There were just as many questions asked today as there were answers given. All we’ve really done now is set the tone for next week.”
