Macy’s is bringing 1,900 new jobs into West Virginia. The news comes after Macy’s Inc. decides to place a $150 million fulfillment distribution center in Berkeley County. Of those 1,900 jobs, 700 are seasonal, while the remaining 1,200 are full and part-time jobs to be had year round.
The new fulfillment and distribution center will support Macy’s online business growth, according to Bill Stubblefield, Berkeley’s County Commissioner.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin was enthusiastic about the project’s implications for the state. “[West Virginia's] financial condition is one of the top in the country, and we’ve been this way for several years now,” the governor said. “One of the things businesses look at when they are looking for places to expand or do new facilities is the tax situation. We are very pleased in West Virginia that for the past 16 years, we have not had to have a general tax increase at all. We have been able to live within our budget.”
The new center will have an annual payroll estimated at more than $30 million at full capacity.
