The Board of Supervisors in San Diego County has made the decision to lay of 27 county workers on Tuesday. The layoffs will save around $2.2 million per year.

18 of the 27 job cuts will come from the Health and Human Services Department and 9 of the layoffs come from the Department of Planning and Land Use.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is under heat though, with the county placing the blame on him and the Legislature claiming that they did not supply the county with sufficient cash to maintain the programs.

The good news is that all of the laid off employees have been offered other jobs within the same county. The bad news is that some of those jobs will see the employees taking pay cuts.

San Diego County is facing a revenue shortfall of around $90 million dollars this fiscal year.

“Unfortunatley, we’re in an economic downturn,” said Sharon-Frances Moore, president of the Service Employees International Union Local 221. “Part of the problem is the state. But we’ve also got to find a way to fix the problem in San Diego County.”

Pam Slater-Price, a county supervisor said, “The problem is the state is not release funding to the county for programs.” She directed a statement at the governor and Legislature: “Take this on to get the cash flowing.”
