The jobs of 61 New Jersey firefighters hang in the balance as the city of Trenton awaits the approval, or rejection, of the SAFER grant they have applied for earlier in the year.
Should the grant be rejected, those 61 firefighters will be terminated on January 5 of next year.
Wayne Wolk, the president of the union representing the firefighters expressed his concerns about the layoffs, which would result in the closing of four stations out of the city’s 11.
“If you add one fire, it would bring every available truck in the city to that one fire. You wouldn’t be able to answer any other calls,” said Wolk.
