WestPoint Home, a maker of textiles for use in home furnishings, is closing a plant in Alabama and adding jobs to another location in Florida.
The Alabama plant employs 190 people, who will be given the option of transferring to the plant in Chipley, Florida. Presumably not everyone will take the transfer, because the expansion in Florida is only expected to add 75 to 100 new positions there.
In Alabama, the company plans to start layoffs in 60 days, and the plant will be completely phased out by the end of the year. The new positions in Florida will be phased in over the next five to six months.
The Chipley plant, which opened in 1983, makes comforters, bed spreads, bed skirts and other textile accesories for the bed.
