Layoff News
The Long Beach Unified School District is facing massive budget cuts along with the rest of California. As a result, the district will be closing two schools, increasing class sizes, and letting go of over 400 teachers. The affected teachers, who will be let go based on seniority, will be notified in March. The board will meet again on February 15th to consider additional layoffs in other positions including administration, librarians, school nurses, and security.
The cuts will increase the student to teacher ratio for K-3rd grade to 30 to 1, about twice the national average. From 3rd – 12th grade, Long Beach schools will have a 35 to 1 student to teacher ratio.
