More than 500 teachers in Marion County, Florida are being laid off as the school district anticipates big cuts in state funding.
That’s about 17% of teaching positions in the central Florida district.
District officials told 522 educators on Friday they won’t have jobs next school year. Some employees who work in support positions will be moved back to the classroom to help make up for the losses.
The district expects to lose $33 million in state funding. The school board’s operational budget, which covers teacher salaries, is currently $277 million.
