Layoff News
Middlesex County, New Jersey, has already laid off 120 workers in the last year. Further budget cuts are necessary and could lead to as many as 50 more cuts, as falling revenues outweighed the savings gained by previous cuts.
In addition to pending layoffs, the county is proposing a 3.7% tax increase. The staff cuts and revenue enhancements are designed to counter a $3.3 million increase in pension costs along with a $3.5 million drop in state money for mental health care aid and the county corrections facility and a $1.5 million decrease in fees collected by the County Clerk’s office.
