Layoff News
Another school district in Texas has announced large scale layoffs in the face of budgetary shortfalls. Georgetown Independent School District in East Texas is passing out pink slips to 142 employees this week. 61 of the cuts will be teachers, with the bulk of the remainder of the cuts targeting support staff. The layoffs are effective for the 2011-12 school year.
The district is making the cuts in anticipation of losing between $6 and $8 Million in state funding this year. The drop in payroll will save approximately $6.5 Million while maintaining student to teacher ratios from 22:1 in kindergarten through 25.1 in the district’s only high school.
