Microsoft Requests Money From Laid Off Employees By patrick  |  Dated: 02-23-2009

Microsoft, the world’s largest software maker, has begun the process of cutting thousands of jobs over the next year and a half, and now they want some of the severance pay back.

An accounting error has caused Microsoft to send a letter to some of the 1,400 workers laid off last month.  The letter said the former employees would need to send part of their severance package back to the corporation.

It is believed that the error overpaid some employees while underpaying others.  The corporation requested that those who were overcompensated return the requested amount by check or money order.

“An inadvertent administrative error occurred that resulted in an overpayment in severance pay by Microsoft,” read the letter. “We ask that you repay the overpayment and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience to you.”

A Microsoft spokesperson would not say how many former employees were overpaid, calling it “a private matter between the company and the affected people.”
