For the first time in  San Jose history police officers may be laid off.  A tentative deal has been reached with the San Jose Police Officers’  Association and it’s 1,220 members that will result in the city  council’s goal of a 10 percent reduction in total compensation and  continued work on pension reform.  Six other unions have reached deals  with the city but unions representing more than half of the cities  civilian workforce have not been agreed upon.  If ratified by the union membership 20 sworn officer’s jobs will turn  into civilian positions, airport patrols will be outsourced and such  perks as sick leave and pensions will be negotiated.
