Businesses, not government, must take the lead in job creation. This was the message delivered at a meeting of the US Chamber of Commerce by Jeffrey Immelt, Chairman and CEO of GE. Immelt, who also serves as chair of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, challenged businesses to take aggressive steps against unemployment by taking on new risks and bringing offshore jobs back to the US. Business representatives did not disagree but cited economic uncertainty and the failure so far to raise the debt ceiling as inhibiting factors.
