Three museums in three separate regions are cutting their staff. The economic downturn of the past few months has taken a severe toll on museum patronage and attendance.
The Detroit Institute of Arts said it will lay off about 20 percent of its staff. That amounts to 61 of their 301 employees. The museum aims to cut $6 million from its $34 million operating budget. The layoffs will affect 56 full time employees and 7 part time employees.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art said it would cut 30 positions through layoffs and attrition. It will also cut the pay of its senior staff. The museum wants to cut $1.7 million from its $52 million operating budget.
The High Museum in Atlanta will cut 7 percent of its staff, eliminating 7 full-time positions and 3 part-time positions. The rest of the staff will experience pay cuts. They are looking to save $1.4 million. Their operating budget is $23.7 million.
