The new academic year has started with concerns over the budget cuts, staff layoffs and shortage of seats. There has been a 10% budget cut since 2007 and now, the city will have to enroll 10,000 more students with 2,600 fewer teachers. Most of the schools have already cut after-school programs and some of them are even having shortage of basic supplies like paper. In some cases, teachers had to spend money from their own pockets to deal the shortage. Authorities say that the budget cuts will continue on a year by year basis, till the economy improves.
