Requests for Unemployment Aid Up by 6,000 Last Week

Almost seven million people received unemployment benefits in the week that ended September 17, suggesting the economy is still sluggish. Layoffs remain high, and employers are hesitant to expand their labor forces. One survey reports that service firms, such as retailers, restaurants, hotels and health care providers have actually made cuts to staffs for the first time in 13 months during September.
