After a 25 percent drop in its endowment, the University of Washington will cut 70 jobs from its fundraising jobs. Another 16 currently full-time positions will be cut back and made part-time.
Half of the jobs to be cut are filled at the moment, the other half are vacant.
UW President Mark Emmert says these are the first wave of layoffs, but are not likely to be the last. Emmert says the university expects legislative cuts in the next two-year budget to result in much larger layoffs.
The cuts announced today are expected to save the University about $6 million a year.
