New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine told radio host John Gambling that workers for the state will face layoffs if furloughs and other cost-reducing measures for the state are not accepted.
State spending is projected to drop below $30 billion in fiscal 2010. The continuing recession has taken a toll on state revenues.
“There are no easy answers and I think all of us understand the unprecedented times we live in,” Corzine said. “It’s a really tough time for people.”
The governor did not confirm reports that he will seek 12 furlough days from state employees, but he said furloughs would help reduce state spending while preventing layoffs.
“If we don’t get cooperation we will have to go to layoffs,” he said.
Corzine also declined to confirm a possible new surcharge on incomes over $250,000.
“Several big decisions still need to be made,” he said.
