National Semiconductor to Cut Over 1,700 Jobs

National Semiconductor will cut more than 1,700 jobs, about 25% of its workforce, as the economic meltdown affects sales.

The company is eliminating 850 positions right away, and 875 over the next year. Manufacturing, sales and marketing will all be affected, and the firm will shutter plants in China and Texas.

National, based in Santa Clara, California, manufactures chips for mobile phones.
