Los Angeles Employment Affected by Private Companies By jim  |  Dated: 02-17-2012

The private companies in and around the Los Angeles are taking over a lot of work, work that was, at one point, performed mostly by state employees, not private employee. And, the Governor, Bobby Jindal, has recently made a new budget proposal which shows there will be even more privatization taking place. With these changes taking place, a lot of people have lost their jobs, which has led to a dramatically low number of state workers. In fact, the number of state employees has not been so low for several decades.

With the new budget plans, proposed by the Governor for 2012-2013, ferries that run along the Mississippi River would be handed out to private businesses. The same goes for the monitoring of criminals at the Avoyelles Parish prison. This would cause many people to lose their jobs. However, Jindal has set this proposal as a way of being able to operate costs efficiently and also show that he is willing to cut costs and corners, so to speak.

In the meantime, the administration does not like the negative effects that are coming along with privatization, especially during a time when the economy is still not as good as it used to be, after dealing with such a huge recession. Many feel as though this proposal seems to be making it harder for employees in this economy, leaving many workers unemployed all over again.

Once the Governor present the proposal, the administration will usually talk about which positions can be eliminated. Positions that can be eliminated are usually positions in which the employees of that position could easily be transferred somewhere else or even hired by those private companies. However, sometimes, positions that are eliminated leads to layoffs instead, with hundreds of employees left seeking for employment.

There are some employees that choose to leave their position prior to actually losing the job. Other employees are usually laid off or forced to work the same position for the private companies yet making much less than they used to make and receiving far less benefits. This simply makes it worse for the employees and worse for the economy as well.

While Jindal is quick to talk about his proposal, he is not quick to talk about how the area is dealing with some of the lowest number of state employees. He also does not talk about how he has worked against the economy, adding to the number of people who lose their job and need to seek unemployment as a means of surviving for the time being. It is important for Jindal and the administration to think about the effect that this proposal would have on tons of hard working state employees.
