Career and Employment Services Study By jim  |  Dated: 04-17-2012

A study from last year was conducted by the Career and Employment Services, which shows some good news for the K-State seniors. There are many students at K-State, both current students and graduates, who will have plenty of opportunities in the current job market, most of which will lead to eventual full time positions.

The study that was conducted shows that within half a year from graduation, roughly 92 percent of K-State graduates had found full-time employment or were continuing on with their education, mostly at graduate school. Only a mere 6 percent of those graduates were still seeking employment.

The director of the Career and Employment Services, Kerri Keller, believes that expectations have truly been exceeded. The university is home to over 20,000 different students and having a job placement rate that is above and beyond 90 percent is simply amazing. Keller says that while this is good news, a higher job placement rate does not always provide the best measure of success. She says that it is generally the students who hold the key to their own success.

Keller says that students cannot always be simply relaxed during college, expecting to simply find work after graduation. She says that students need to be proactive while they are still in college, gaining experience in the field of their choice. She says internships provide this experience and look good on a resume, which would increase the chances of a recent graduate being hired for a full-term position. In fact, there are a lot of companies that are using internships as a way of figuring out who they will hire. There are companies that will only hire people who have worked as intern before because they believe that is a great way of getting the individual used to the company before adding them on board as an employee.

Keller says that it is mostly important to provide different opportunities for the students, enabling them to get as much internship and other types of opportunities as possible. Students need to think ahead if they want to get ahead come graduation time.

Donald Fenton, who works as the head of Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, says that internships are an important step for students, especially if they want to find full-time employment as soon as possible. An internship allows companies to get used to a person and it also shows that the individual is determined to prove that they have what it takes to be successful. For added success, it is important that career fairs are organized for the students as a way of helping them get connected with companies that match the particular field that they are interested in getting into after completing their college courses.
