The Long Island College Hospital to Cut 150 Jobs By katie  |  Dated: 07-23-2012

The Long Island College Hospital is probably not a place that you have heard of unless you have been a patient there. For those of you who are not familiar with the hospital here is a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself, “SUNY Downstate Medical Center, founded in 1860, was the first medical school in the United States to bring teaching out of the lecture hall and to the patient’s bedside. A center of innovation and excellence in research and clinical service delivery, SUNY Downstate Medical Center comprises a College of Medicine, Colleges of Nursing and Health Related Professions, a School of Graduate Studies, a School of Public Health, University Hospital of Brooklyn, and an Advanced Biotechnology Park and Biotechnology Incubator.”

Apparently all of that history is not enough to allow the 150 workers that they are getting ready to get rid of in order to set their budget to right. The workers are getting ready to be put of the payrolls in a mass layoff action. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.” The only good news is that under the terms of a mass layoff action workers must be give several weeks of notice in order to have time to adjust to the loss of income that comes with a layoff.

The hospital has not put out a press release about the job cuts, and they have not said id they are offering the workers who are going to be impacted by the job cuts any kind of extra severance or benefits in order to allow them to make the transition less abruptly. For the time being all we do know is that the hospital is cutting back on workers in order to fix problems with the budget.

Of course, this is not the only hospital to have to cut back on staff in the recent past in order to fix its budget. Some of your may recall our earlier coverage of cuts to another facility, but for those of you who missed out on it here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “Fort Hamilton Hospital, a facility which is part of the larger Kettering Health Network is getting ready to cut back on an unknown number of workers from the nursing staff. The facility will be cutting back on the number of Licensed Practical Nurses at it facility in a move that is designed to help decrease the overall expense of running the facility.”
