Granite Services Inc. to Cut 59 Workers By katie  |  Dated: 08-20-2012

When it comes to companies and their management you may not always be aware of who own what. Take for example the case of Granite Services Inc. The company, which deals in a surprising number of things, describes itself and its ownership in pretty succinct terms, “Granite Services Inc., a wholly owned affiliate of GE, is a global provider of service solutions to the Power Generation, Oil and Gas, Nuclear and Wind Turbine sectors.  With over 25 years of experience in the Energy industry, Granite provides services ranging from advanced planning and project controls to complete project execution, including startup and commissioning. At Granite, we believe in partnering with clients to provide our global field expertise to consistently deliver results that meet and exceed our clients’ operational goals.  Our offices are located in over 45 countries throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America.”

Sadly the company is getting ready to make a mass layoff action happen. The company will be getting rid of about 59 workers at its North Carolina facility in order to cut back on its costs. The layoffs, which will go into effect on the 29th of September, are for the moment very unclear about the details. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

The company has not put out any information about he layoff action, but when all is said and done the company is not saying what kind of severance packages the workers will be given, or details on exactly which jobs are going to be cut from the payroll. The company is still putting out news releases however, but the most recent one was about a conference they plan to attend. Here is an excerpt from that release, “TAMPA, Florida – June 22, 2012 – Granite Services, Inc., a leading provider of turbine service solutions in the Oil and Gas and Power Generation industries, will be exhibiting at the 41st Turbomachinery Symposium in Houston, Texas from September 25-27, 2012.”

This is not the only company that is impacted by the workers of the power industry. For those of you who missed out on the earlier coverage of job cuts to RWE here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “Sadly as an employer the company is not doing very well at all. The company has come to the decision to cut back on another 2,400 jobs in order to service its bottom line. When you add these to the job cuts that the company announced last year the company will be shedding more than 10,000 jobs between now and the end of 2014.”
