Job Outlook in Nevada Seems Positive By jim  |  Dated: 08-21-2012

In Nevada County, there were nearly 630 jobs lost throughout last month. It is believed that the loss of such jobs was due to the changes of the seasons and not so much economic issues, which is actually a good thing. If there were economic issues, there would be the possibility of more people being put out of work during the following months. Diane Patterson, a labor market analyst at the California Employment Department, has said, “There is typically a drop in July despite in an increase in retailing due to an annual drop in local government jobs.”

While some people may feel that job loss is negative news for Nevada County, Patterson begs to differ. Instead, she says, “What stands out about the report is that according to the historical pattern, Nevada County is right on track with the normal seasonal trend.” Patterson also made it quite clear that of the different employment sectors that are measured for job gains and losses, a total of five sectors saw advances in the number of positions available between the months of June through July. Only three of the twelve sectors saw a decline during the same exact period of time.

During the span of the month, the Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector for the county managed to add a total of 40 jobs, which was a total increase of around 0.4 percent. At the same time, the manufacturing sector saw an increase of around 3.5 percent when it came down to available positions added within that sector. All of the information was originally provided by the Labor Force. With these types of results, Patterson feels positively about the labor market and its progress in Nevada County. In fact, she has even said, “These are all good signs.”

One particular sector in Nevada, the manufacturing sector, has struggled and is actually down by a total of 2.7 percent when compared with the previous year during the same exact timeframe. While this sector is struggling, other sectors in the area are managing to see an incredible amount of growth, which includes the leisure and hospitality sector. This particular sector increased by a total of3 percent in just one month, which is definitely good. The sector also has plenty more jobs available now than it did during the same exact time from the previous year. Employment is higher in this sector than it has been in several decades. Of course, this is nothing but good news for the particular sector and for Nevada County as whole.
