Tornos is a name that many of us may not know much about when all is said and done. For those of you who are not too familiar with the company here is a look at how the organization chooses to describe itself, “Tornos is a company that develops, manufactures and sells single-spindle and multispindle automatic turning machines and machining centres for small parts, as well as their associated products and services…From an operational point of view, Tornos has opted in every respect for an organization that guarantees maximum flexibility in terms of costs, given the cyclical and unpredictable nature of its business.”

Sadly the company is getting ready to get rid of 225 workers in a bid to trim back its costs significantly, though for the time being the company has not said much about how they choose these workers to be cut, or what kind of a severance they are going to be given when they are cut from the payrolls and left to find new jobs. For now the impacted workers can only come and see how they will be impacted by the cuts.

Interestingly the company’s most recent release was not about the loss of jobs on the whole, but was instead about the expansion of the company and how they are growing, “Tornos Holding expands its business to strengthen its position as a supplier of integrated solutions for its four benchmark market segments. Although it is active in a sector that is traditional and sometimes quite conventional, Tornos has had innovation deeply embedded in its genes since its creation; so much so that now, for the first time in its history, the manufacturer is launching itself into a new area, outside its usual field of expertise, with a brand new and innovative solution. Tornos has been well-known and renowned as a manufacturer of very high precision automatic turning machines for over 100 years, and it was even one of the pioneers in automatic turning machines at the time; today, with the launch of the company Cyklos SA, composed of 7 people and based in Yverdon, the group is hoping that this diversification will enable it to become a pioneering supplier of a new genre of surface treatment solutions. Cyklos solutions will enable production workshops to verticalise surface treatment operations; a process which, up to now, required special premises and extensive technical chemical knowledge.” Information like this is enough to make one wonder why it is the company is laying off workers at all.

Of course this is not the only company making cuts to their workers. For those of you who missed out on our earlier coverage of cuts to Brillion Iron Works here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all, “The company is getting ready to layoff about 200 workers in a mass layoff action that is designed to help the company cut back on its expenses and become a leaner operation.” So as you can see many workers from diverse fields are going to be cut when the economy is done.
