E.J. Noble Hospital to Cut Jobs By katie  |  Dated: 10-03-2012

E.J. Noble Hospital is a name that you may not know about at all. For those of you who are not familiar with facility here is a look at how they have chosen to describe themselves, “E.J. Noble Hospital, located in Gouverneur, NY, is an acute care facility nestled along the Oswegatchie River amidst the scenic river valley in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains and we are within minutes of the 1000 Island Parkway and the Canadian Border. E.J. Noble Hospital, which consists of 37 beds, and the Kinney Nursing Home, which consists of 40 beds, are not-for-profit facilities that employ approximately 190 full-time and 50 part-time personnel in a wide range of professional, technical and support services. The hospital’s primary service area has grown steadily to an estimated population of over 25,000 people from various townships surrounding Gouverneur, NY.”

Sadly the health care facility is getting ready to cut back on about 70 jobs, as they are getting ready to close down, or minimize, some of the services that they offer to their clients. With this many job cuts on tap the company is bound to trigger a mass layoff action. For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

This is, as you can imagine, not the only hospital to make job cuts in the recent past. UMass Memorial Health Care also had to make some significant cuts in the recent past, “Sadly the health care company is getting ready to eliminate about 140 jobs between now and the end of its fiscal year. The new fiscal year begins on the first of October, which means that the job cuts are going to come in the very near future.”

Before that the jobs lost were at Saint Thomas Health. For those of you who missed it here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed in no time at all , “In this case the mass layoff will mean the loss of 150 jobs from the company, at two different locations. The bulk of the cuts, and the guaranteed mass layoff action will occur at Saint Thomas Hospital. That facility is taking about two-thirds of the cuts. The other facility, Baptist Hospital, will lose only about one-third of the 150 workers, making its status a mass layoff questionable for the time being. It is also possible that some of the jobs may be able to be cut through attrition. The only good news is that under the terms of a mass layoff action the workers must be given several weeks of notice before they can be cut from the payroll. So the workers have some time to adjust to the news.”
