American Airlines to Cut More Jobs Yet Again By katie  |  Dated: 10-08-2012

American Airlines is getting ready to make another mass layoff action happen. The layoffs, which are set to impact about 370 workers at the company’s Tulsa Maintenance & Engineering Center are set to happen between now and February.

For those of you who are not familiar with the idea of a mass layoff action here is a look at how the federal government defines the term, “The Mass Layoff Statistics (MLS) program collects reports on mass layoff actions that result in workers being separated from their jobs. Monthly mass layoff numbers are from establishments which have at least 50 initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) filed against them during a 5-week period. Extended mass layoff numbers (issued quarterly) are from a subset of such establishments—where private sector nonfarm employers indicate that 50 or more workers were separated from their jobs for at least 31 days.”

Those of you who read this site regularly will remember that this is by no means the first mass layoff action this year for the troubled company. For those of you who missed  the very large layoffs from September here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed, “After several rounds of layoffs most people though that the company was done with the bulk of its layoffs after cutting several large rounds of workers. Yet the company is getting ready to make another mass layoff action happen…The company has sent layoff notices to 11,159 workers, all of whom were members of the Transport Workers Union. For the time being the company is not saying exactly how many jobs will be cut from that, but with this many workers on the line even a loss of 10 percent of the notified jobs will be large.”

The next most recent round of job cuts before that came in March, “What does that mean in terms of jobs? Well, for the current moment it means that about 600 jobs are on the chopping block. Of course these 600 people who are going to put out of work are not nearly enough to cover all of that. More of the money will be saved by asking workers to take a pay cut, if by ask you mean demand, and by cutting back on the amount of extra hours that are available to workers who are paid by the hour. At the current moment no details have been given about the nature of the employees who are going to be cut, how many from which positions and what, if any, kind of severance or benefits they will be entitled to once they are cut loose by their employer.

Before that the cuts were coming in February and impacting 13,000 people, “We do however know what kinds of jobs are going to be cut. According to information provided by the Associated Press cuts will come to the following positions: 4,600 maintenance workers, 4,200 baggage handlers, 2,300 flight attendants, 1,400 unnamed members of the management and support staff, and 400 pilots. As was mentioned above the company did recently file for bankruptcy, and their parent company, AMR Corp, has ordered them to cut their costs associated with labor by about 20 percent when all is said an done. In addition the company needs to cut spending by about $2 billion a year.”
