Sony Confirms 2,000 Layoffs in Japan By katie  |  Dated: 10-22-2012

Sony is a name that most of you are familiar with. After all if you enjoy media consumption of most kinds, like watching TV or movies, playing video games or enjoying any number of other electronic devices then you have probably at least seen some of their devices. Then again maybe you are just are an avid reader of this site. After all if you follow layoffs then you have heard the name Sony quite a bit before.  Sadly the company is getting ready to make a major layoff action in Japan, where 2,000 workers are going to be cut from a factory owned by the company.

Some of you may recall our September coverage of the rumors of a massive re-organization of the company and the large layoffs that might come, “A reorganization action is rumored to be sweeping through the staff at Sony Computer Entertainment America. The company will be cutting back on an unspecified number of workers in this reorganization. For now the only clear details about the job cuts are related to the closure of the public relations department, which is located in the city of San Diego. If the job cuts total as high as some are estimating then the company will trigger a mass layoff action… For now there is no official word from the company about the nature of the job cuts, what other divisions are set to take cuts and when the rest of the cuts will be into effect.”

Before that there were more layoffs made by the company in August. For those of you who missed out on our coverage of layoffs here is an excerpt that will get you up to speed, “Most of us know the name Sony. You may not have heard of one of its subsidiaries, Sony Mobile Communications. You may also not know that the company is getting ready to cut back on about 1,000 jobs in that division. Those cuts, which will represent about 15 percent of this subsidiary, are set to impact workers in multiple nations, with the bulk of the cuts coming from Sweden.”

Even before that our coverage looked at the cuts made by the company back in April, “When most of you think about problems for Sony you probably think about the recent trouble that they had with the security of the personal data of people with a Playstation Network Account. You might even think about the last time you had to call the Sony customer support line for a product. You probably do no think much about the possibility that this electronics company is going to let go of about 10,000 workers, but that is exactly what the company is getting ready to do. Those 10,000 workers are going to be let go sometime between now and the end of the year, though they will most likely be cut incrementally to make managing this number of layoffs a less monumental tasks. The layoffs are going to impact workers form all areas of the globe, instead of only one specific country. The announcement of these jobs cuts, which was made early this morning by the company, is only going to impact about six percent of the workers the company employs overall.”
