Is GLOBALFOUNDRIES a name that you are familiar with? Do not worry if you do not know the company that well. The company, which is fairly recent in its creation, is not well known by those outside of the manufacturing industry. For those of you who are not familiar with the company let’s begin by taking a look at how the company has chosen to describe itself before we talk about the job cuts that the organization is making, “GLOBALFOUNDRIES entered the foundry industry in early 2009 with a simple but ambitious goal to become the world’s first truly global foundry. As the former manufacturing arm of AMD, we possess tremendous assets in our leading-edge manufacturing and technology capabilities. With the integration of Chartered Semiconductor, initiated in late 2009, GLOBALFOUNDRIES achieved scale as one of the world’s largest foundries in the world by revenue, with more than 150 customers, creating a new platform for innovation to drive the current and future generations of semiconductor technology.”

Sadly the company is going to cut back on about 300 workers in a move that is designed to help the company to decrease its head count and increase its overall profitability.  The cuts, which have not been outlined in much detail, are coming to workers at all levels, including the management of the company.

Interestingly enough in a recent release the company chose to talk about expansion projects, instead of the layoffs to come, “GLOBALFOUNDRIES today announced an innovative partnership with Masdar Institute to help spur the continued development of Abu Dhabi as a center for semiconductor R&D and manufacturing excellence. This broad international talent base provides the company with substantial competitive advantages, combining leading-edge technology knowledge, foundry experience and a strong graduate base from universities and research institutes. GLOBALFOUNDRIES Abu Dhabi is building on and extending the excellent track record of university relations by providing a unique approach to offering access to researchers and students of Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi.In September 2012, GLOBALFOUNDRIES granted a number of students and professors from Masdar privileged access to the company’s technology development platform from the GLOBALFOUNDRIES Abu Dhabi office, located in the HQ building, Al Raha. The laboratory-like environment includes powerful production servers, engineering work stations and a high-speed data network enabling remote access to one of the world’s most advanced nanotechnology engineering systems based at GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ leading-edge Fab 1 in Dresden, Germany. The environment will provide university researchers and students with wide access to process design kits (PDKs) for advanced semiconductor technology nodes, including the latest High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) transistor technology.”
