Some experts consider SPF ratings on sunscreens to be misleading and potentially dangerous. In a survey of 1,400 sunscreen products conducted by the Environment Working Group, one in seven products were found to boast SPF ratings above 50. These ratings, which sometimes go as high as 100 or 150, give consumers a false sense of security because the difference between SPF ratings is actually negligible at the high end of the scale.
