Southfield, Michigan Schools to Lay Off 150

Southfield, Michigan school board members will vote Tuesday on layoffs, as part of a budget for the 2009-10 school year. The layoffs would affect 150, or 14% of the district’s workforce.

Cuts will be made in administrative, teaching, support and clerical staff. Most cuts will affect union workers.

The district hasn’t ruled out school closures.

The district has budget deficit of $10 million for the coming school year, due to declining enrollment and reduced state financing.
