After catching your manager’s eye with your dedication and commitment, you may find yourself in charge of a large work project that is critical to the objectives of the company. Such an opportunity is definitely exciting, but in order to overcome the challenges ahead you must learn how to ensure you don’t let fear set in or fail in your tasks.


Step One: Organization is Key


Before attempting to tackle any task, you need to get organized. All project objectives and parameters should already be identified by your supervisor. Take the time to set up a project timeline, rating tasks on a scale of #1 – #3 according to the difficulty of each.


Step Two: Project Segmentation


Large projects can be overwhelming and sometimes intimidating, but if you break a project up into segments then you can breathe easier by tackling one piece at a time. Along the way, you are able to record and view your progress and accomplishment.


Step Three: What are You Waiting for? Get Started Now!


The majority of people get very excited and energetic about the big project they are presented with, but many put off getting started. Instead of wasting your energy on enthusiasm alone, get started by tackling the most intensive part of the large project right away.


Step Four: Deadlines Need to be Set & Met


All phases of your project, including individual tasks need to have deadlines set. Delegate and assign tasks with deadlines. Be firm with both your team and yourself about meeting deadlines that are set. Always include room in your project schedule to accommodate any problems that may crop up (which there are bound to be from time to time).


Step Five: Schedule in Breaks


While working hard on achieving your goals is important, you need to make sure you are including breaks in your schedule. When you are working through your lunches and ignoring basic needs like going to the restroom and eating, then you are going to immediately impact your performance and accuracy while negatively affecting your health.


Step Six: Asking for Help is Not a Sign of Weakness


If you encounter an issue, question, or concern about the project or need suggestions and feedback, don’t be afraid to ask your co-workers, team, and supervisor. You will gain the fresh perspective you need, and everyone involved in the project will be happy they were able to contribute. If you become truly overloaded with work on the project, contact your supervisor immediately instead of failing to meet deadlines.


Step Seven: Review and Analyze.


Your excitement is building as your project approaches completion, but don’t let the excitement take over. Review everything once it is complete to take a look at everything that has been done. What phases stressed you out? In what ways could the project have gone smoother? Take notes about your process to refer to in the future. Last minute changes should be thoroughly reviewed before handing in the final results to your supervisor.
