President Barack Obama’s administration will accelerate the implementation of its $787 billion economic stimulus plan, to create more than 600,000 jobs in the next 100 days.

The nation’s unemployment rate hit 9.4% last week, the highest in 25 years.

Cabinet members have set key targets for the next 100 days:

• Expanded service for 300,000 patients at 1,100 health centers in 50 states and eight territories
• Jobs improving 107 national parks
• Improvement projects at 98 airports and 1,500 highways
• 135,000 education jobs including teachers, principals and support staff
• Improvements at 90 Veterans Affairs medical centers in 38 states
• Hire or keep 5,000 law enforcement officers.
• Build 200 new waste and water systems in rural areas
• Begin or accelerate cleanup work at 20 Superfund sites
• Create 125,000 summer youth jobs
• Initiate 2,300 construction and rehabilitation projects at 360 military facilities

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is an economic stimulus package enacted by the 111th United States Congress and signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009. The Act of Congress was based largely on proposals made by President Obama, and is intended to provide a stimulus to the US economy in the wake of the economic downturn. The measures are nominally worth $787 billion.
