LAUSD Saves 500 Jobs

The Los Angeles Unified School District is canceling nearly 500 layoffs.School administrators are using funds to “buy back” teachers and counselors.
The LAUSD faces a $133-million deficit this fiscal year, and has issued preliminary layoff notices to 2,500 employees.
The Los Angeles Unified School District is the largest public school system in California, and the second-largest in the United States. During the 2007-2008 school year, the LAUSD served 694,000 students, and had 45,500 teachers and 38,500 other employees. It is the second largest employer in Los Angeles County, after the county government. The total school district budget for 2008 was almost $20 billion dollars.
