Islip Seeks To Reduce Layoffs

Islip, New York’s town board will meet Tuesday night to discuss, and possibly amend, a list of approved layoffs. They are seeking to reduce the number from 97 to 71.
The decision will largely depend on whether or not more town employees retire and if the town workers’ union will provide concessions.
Also up for discussion are two battling resolutions which propose additional savings in payroll management.
“If we can get the town down to no layoffs, then we would consider that,” said union vice president Richard Hendershot.
Republican Councilman Steven Flotteron has proposed a resolution that would reduce salaries of managers earning more than $60,000 by 10 percent as well as implementing a 15 percent health-insurance premium contribution for management.
