Citing “extraordinary economic conditions,” steel company ArcelorMittal is set to lay off 171 steelworkers at its tin mill in West Virginia.
ArcelorMittal announced last month it would cut an unspecified number of jobs in 2010 and a company spokesperson specified the tin mill cuts to local television stations on Monday.
The Associated Press reports 35 workers were cut this week and another 100 or so have been on rotating, voluntary layoff since last year and that those layoffs will now continue indefinitely.
