Defense contractor Lockheed Martin informed 472 employees nationwide on Tuesday that they will be getting the axe.
A plant in Owego, New York absorbed 104 of these layoffs. The range of the positions were experienced across the board, from floor workers to management.
Lockheed just announced yesterday plans to develop a copter for the Navy’s revived Marine One program, forming a partner with Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in the process.
“Should there be a future opportunity with our business where an employee notified today meets the necessary skill requirements of a future position, we would certainly encourage them to apply,” said Spokesperson Jeff Brown.
The employees will have two weeks until they leave, and will be offered the standard severance packages offered by the company.
