UGA Spared Major Layoffs

As recently as March, officials at the University of Georgia, Athens, were predicting 1418 layoffs in order to offset a possible $300 million cut in state university funding. The cut never materialized in the state legislature, and with a $500 per student per semester increase in tuition, UGA President Michael Adams now says the university can get by with “very limited layoffs and program reductions.”The increased tuition rates will generate $17.5 million in extra revenue for the school this year. Adams added that the university plans to hire 24 new faculty members in the coming months.
